Kali Shalwar by Manto

Set in the year 1947, Kaali Shalwar is the story of Sultana, an eighteen-year-old prostitute who along with his pimp and lover, Khudabaksh, comes to Old Delhi’s red light area post-partition. Soon she meets Shankar, a young enigmatic man in his mid-20s and a local of the area. Gradually she falls for his unapologetic ways and an undeniable charm.

Mukhtar, the most beautiful dancer in the area in her late 20s who is known to always choose men over money, has been in an unrequited love with Shankar since she has known him. Amidst this, Muharram is about to come and everybody is preparing their dresses for the occasion when Sultana asks Shankar to bring her a black Shalwar to complete her attire.

How Shankar manages that ‘Kaali Shalwar’ constitutes the premise of this classic play that explores complex human emotions, the unsaid pain, and the price one pays to love.
