Kakande at the Parkside Lounge

Welcome to Kakande at the Parkside Lounge! Join us for a night of lively music and dancing at Parkside near Flatbush on Sat May 10 2025 starting at 8:30 PM.

Famoro Dioubate leads the band on the balafon. A djeli (a.k.a. griot a.k.a. living history book of the Mandingo tradition) from Guinea, his musical training started a dozen generations before he was born. His powerful xylophone rhythms will move your soul and feet, with an amazing band of superstar musicians. Raul Rothblatt turns his cello into a West African groove machine.

This music is a living tradition, starting when the balafon was the court instrument of Sundiata Keita as he founded the Mande Empire in 1235. These melodies are designed to bring you courage and joy.

From 8:30 to 9, you'll have a chance to get a dive into the meaning of the music with an intimate discussion with Famoro Dioubate. Music starts at 9pm. Be prepared to dance.
