(Bi Gan, 2015, China, 110 minutes)
Just 26 at the time of its premiere (the same age as Orson Welles was when Citizen Kane opened; just sayin’), Chinese wunderkind Bi Gan quickly came to international prominence with Kaili Blues, which combines the ethereality of an Apichatpong Weerasethakul film with the prolonged technical virtuosity of Alfonso Cuarón. Tasked with his deceased mother’s wish for him to locate his long-lost nephew and charged by a coworker to find her former lover, ex-con and current doctor Chen finds himself temporally displaced as he travels from Kaili to Dangmai to find these missing persons. What stands on its own as an incredible achievement now in some ways feels like Bi kicking the tires and making sure an even more ambitious film, Long Day’s Journey into Night, would work. (Which it most assuredly does, as we’ll see in our Tuesday, May 7 show of that film in 3D at the Hi-Pointe.)
Showing with “A Short Story” (Bi Gan, 2022, China, 15 minutes), director Bi’s most recent completed work. A cinematic magic trick that is in part about magic (think F for Fake and you’re not too far off), “A Short Story” is told from the point of view of a cat trying to find the most precious thing in the world.
In Mandarin with English subtitles.
