Oriya Ricardo, a girl full of light and joy, who loved music and dance, was murdered at the Nova party on October 7, 2023.
Her mother, Hannie Ricardo, recreated Oriya in sound, in the oratorio “Kaddish for Oriya,”
based on the words of the Kaddish, and dedicated it to her beloved daughter.
Hannie Ricardo, a musician and historian, incorporated into “Kaddish” Shabbat hymns that her grandfather taught her as a child, quoted works written during the Holocaust, and drew a direct line connecting the Holocaust to the October 7th massacre, an event that chillingly echoed the horrors of the Holocaust.
The premiere of “Kaddish for Oriya” was on the anniversary of the massacre, 07.10.2024, at the Tel Aviv Opera House.
The work is a connection between past, present, and future and an expression of pain, a stand against it, a defiance in the face of growing anti-Semitism, and a way to fight it.
“Kaddish to Oriya” will be performed on October 16th
in the Zucker Hall, at the Tel Aviv Cultural Centre
