The first film in our commemorative series marking Korea's National Liberation Day on August 15 is the 2015 box-office epic Assassination!

Set in 1933 during Japan's colonial rule over Korea, the Korean Provisional Government assigns three unlikely operatives to a secret mission: assassinate a Japanese military commander and a powerful Korean collaborator (Lee Jung-jae). As elite sniper Ahn Ok-yun (Gianna Jun), sharpshooter Sok-po, and explosives expert Hwang Deok-sam prepare for the operation, a hired gun known as Hawaii Pistol (Ha Jung-woo) is sent to track them down. Loyalties collide, hidden identities emerge, and the mission unfolds into a gripping story of sacrifice, betrayal, and the shared fight for Korea's independence.

Directed by Choi Dong-hoon, Assassination is one of the highest-grossing films in Korean box office history, acclaimed for its thrilling action, compelling characters, and powerful portrayal of Korea's independence movement. It won for best film at both the PaekSang Arts Awards and Blue Dragon Film Awards, as well as best actress for Gianna Jun at the Daejong Film Awards.
