1,400 people of faith packed the Nehemiah Assembly. Now we show up again. On April 27th, we gathered as a modern Great Assembly – just like Nehemiah of old. We heard the outcry of our people. We listened to neighbors who have lost loved ones to gun violence. We heard stories of those who slept on the streets for 27 years before finally getting a home.
And we got commitments.
All three City Council members present – Shepard, Johnston, and Glasscock – committed to:
1. Codifying best practices for affordable housing transparency
2. Supporting Director Stang's plan for $10 million annually for affordable housing for the next three years
3. Putting affordable housing and homelessness back on the ballot by 2027
But the City Manager declined to even show up and would not address our gun violence proposals at the assembly. People are dying. We cannot wait.
Now we take our case directly to the full City Council.
WHAT WE'LL DO:
🔹 Bring people power to the city-wide listening session – The council is asking for community priorities. We will make sure our voice is heard clearly: "We need investment in affordable housing!"
🔹 Hold the council accountable – They made commitments at the Nehemiah Assembly. Now we need to see follow-through.
🔹 Call for action on gun violence – We need a violence problem analysis, just like Knoxville and Columbus used to cut homicides by 35% and reach 15-year lows. The City Manager said no. We're asking the Council to say yes.
SCHEDULE:
🕔4:30 PM – Be encouraged to arrive early to park and make your way through security.
🕔 5:00 PM – Gather outside Council Chambers (bring a friend, bring your congregation)
🕠 5:30 PM – Listening session begins inside
🕖 7:00 PM – Closing reflection
WHAT TO BRING:
