On December 19, 2020, a Lowell police officer, in an effort to make an arrest, approached the car of Moses Harris in a parking lot close to the Concord River. In surveillance footage from the parking lot, the officer can be seen approaching Harris, 25, who had stepped out of his car and raised both hands above his head. The officer had a weapon out, presumably to dispense his form of justice right there on the spot, and then Moses began to run, with the officer chasing him on foot. The body of Moses was found 77 days later in the Merrimack River. Why was a weapon needed when a man was unarmed and had his hands up? Many believe there was reason for Moses to fear that he was facing violence even though he was unarmed with his hands up.The police made unverified claims after the incident, providing no evidence backing up their claims. Despite ongoing efforts to get all the facts, many vital pieces of information are still missing. The police and justice system have stonewalled the family of Moses for 5 years. They want the unredacted police report and the names of the officers involved. The family wants answers! This case follows an all too familiar pattern: A Black or Brown man is murdered; very little information is forthcoming; the victim is smeared; nonsensical stories emerge; under pressure, the police investigate themselves, and the assailant is exonerated. Police misconduct resulting in the death of a civilian should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Please join the family of Moses Harris in demanding answers and justice!
