COEXIST (bio)
Emerging from the heart of Oakland's music scene is Coexist — a mesmerizing cocktail of R&B and Jazz Fusion that doesn't just touch the soul, but seduces it. Orchestrated by the rhythmic genius of Sheldon Alexander on drums, the ensemble boasts the intoxicating vocals of Veotis Latchison, Miles Blackwell's alluring bass lines, the fiery embrace of Max Brody’s guitar riffs, and the luscious piano harmony of Caleb Phair.
Drawing inspiration from musical powerhouses such as the D’Angelo, Robert Glasper, PJ Morton, and Cory Henry, Coexist weaves intricate jazz harmonies with the emotive depth of R&B. Our sound isn't just about the mastery of notes and rhythm; it's a call to the heart, urging listeners to lose themselves in dance and embrace the warmth of companionship.
At the core of our music is a simple yet profound vision: to craft a musical ambiance that encourages folks to dance and hold that special someone close to them. It's a vision that transcends the conventional boundaries of music genres, bringing listeners on a journey that's both introspective and celebratory.
Sheldon Alexander is a multifaceted drummer, educator, and composer based in the Bay Area. He began his musical journey at the age of three, playing drums in his great uncle's church. Sheldon's passion for various genres, including Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, and Afro-rooted styles, flourished during his formative years. After thriving in jazz bands and ensembles during high school, he pursued his studies at the prestigious California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley. As the founder of the R&B fusion band Coexist, Sheldon merges diverse musical styles, creating captivating performances that resonate deeply with audiences.
Kevin Person Jr. began taking piano lessons at the age of 8 but did not truly become passionate about the instrument until he stumbled across jazz and gospel music. Later on he began to play the piano and organ at his father’s local church. After high school he pursued a degree in jazz performance at California State University Fresno, where he played in various jazz ensembles. During his studies at the University he studied piano under Andreas Werz and Craig VonBerg.
Miles Blackwell, a bassist and singer from Oakland California specializes in Funk and Soul music, but has a background in Afro-Cuban, Afrobeat, and Jazz music from his time at the Oakland School for the Arts. While at OSA, Miles studied under Dave Ellis (Charlie Hunter Group and The Grateful Dead), Josh Jones (Omar Sosa and 2Pac Shakur), and Kev Choice (Lauren Hill and Michael Franti). Currently, he is studying bass with LA based bassist Max Gerl, and is touring with The California Honeydrops on bass and background vocals.
Max Brody is an Oakland-based guitarist, composer and arranger in styles including jazz, funk, rock and folk. He can be found performing with groups including Coexist, Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, and 90’s pop band Britney’s Peers.
Veotis Latchison is an innovative songwriter, producer, and vocalist from Oakland, California. His artistic expression is deeply influenced by a mix of hip hop, R&B, soul, and jazz, drawing inspiration from artists like James Brown, Anderson Paak, and Otis Redding. Veotis started his musical journey at the age of six, singing in the New Hope Baptist Church in Emeryville, California. His exposure to western classical and jazz music during his later schooling further shaped his musical palette. Veotis has made significant strides in his career, releasing an album titled "Minutiae" and performing extensively across the Bay Area.
