Just a Visit? National Pr*son Visitors' Centre Conference 2022

Almost two-thirds of those in custody within Scottish prisons are parents (2015), however over half of these parents receive no visits from their children throughout their sentence. This conference seeks to explore why. The needs of children impacted by imprisonment are complex, so can this contact ever be viewed as Just a Visit for children and young people?

Pr*son Visitors’ Centres work to improve the emotional well-being of children affected by imprisonment and towards increased quality contact between children and their loved one in Pr*son.

This conference is for professionals involved in supporting families affected by imprisonment in the voluntary sector, the funding community, the Scottish Pr*son Service, Social work services, the NHS, and statutory services. Families impacted by imprisonment are also more than welcome to attend.

The conference will offer delegates the opportunity to:

• Hear directly from children and young people currently being supported by visitors’ centres

• Learn what the impact of familial imprisonment has on children and young people and its correlation with the numbers who visit

• Review what needs to be considered when children and young people visit a Pr*son

• Hear about the work of visitors’ centres in providing support for prisoners’ families and the positive impact this has on children, young people, those in custody, and the Pr*son staff supporting them

• Understand the impact of UNCRC and The Promise in relation to children and young people visiting a Pr*son

• Learn about developments in Scottish Pr*son Service policies aimed at supporting children and young people who visit

• Network with other professionals working with families affected by imprisonment
