Juraj Herz's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1978)- Gorgeous & Dark Czech Adaptation!

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a spectacularly dark and atmospheric adaptation of one of history’s greatest tragically romantic fairytales, with Czech visionary Juraj Herz’s fantasy-horror masterpiece BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1978)!

From Herz’s (The Cremator, Morgiana) rich and textured imagination comes his vivid reimagining of the classic fairy tale. His film follows the innocent Julie, the daughter of a poor and destitute merchant, as she travels into the haunted wood to find her missing father. There she finds a decaying castle inhabited by strange creatures, ruled over by the beaked Netvor, an imposing and frightening being that is part bird, part serpent, part man – whom Herz brings to life with spectacular makeup and special effects. Though held under Netvor’s watchful eye, Julie’s love for him unexpectedly grows, even as he is torn between his growing affection for her and his animalistic urge to K*ll.

While its visual sumptuousness and aching poeticism puts it in good company with its classic predecessor, Jean Cocteau’s surreal 1946 masterpiece, Herz went to the original story by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and returned with a version that is darker than any before or since, seated firmly in the morbid territory of Gothic horror. Herz renders a world laced with cobwebs and caked in mud and decay, one where an air of heavy impending doom infuses the fairytale romance with a sense of genuine danger – yet all captured with stunning dreamlike cinematography.

Newly restored and not to be missed on the big screen, Herz’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is gorgeously shot, intriguingly surreal, thrillingly sensual, and unlike any adaptation before or since.

PARKING

Limited parking is available onsite at PRS in both the front lot (entry from Los Feliz Blvd. when heading east) and back lot (entry from first alley way, off Griffith Park Blvd. from intersection with Los Feliz Blvd.), as well as street parking on Griffith Park Blvd. and (after 7 PM) on Los Feliz Blvd. We encourage attendees to consider carpooling, walking or biking to events if possible, and please be considerate of our Los Feliz neighbors when parking, many thanks.
