Tiny Brunei is a little-known country on the island of Borneo, infamous for its leader, the Sultan, one of the wealthiest monarchs on earth. Indeed, the country has significant wealth – it is the third largest oil producer in Southeast Asia and the fourth largest producer of natural gas in the world. But Brunei’s real treasure is its pristine, practically untouched rainforest. While much of the rainforest in Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo has been devastated due to cutting for hardwoods and planting of palm oil plantations, Brunei’s wealth has meant it has never needed to deforest – preserving a vast, old-growth jungle teeming with wildlife.
Ulu Temburong National Park is spread over 505 sq km (212 sq m) of this natural habitat, boasting a biodiversity unlike anywhere in the world. Only reachable by river, here we’ll find hundreds of unique species of birds and mammals and thousands of rare species of flowers and trees – all in a lush unspoiled paradise of dense jungle foliage and sparkling pools and waterfalls.
Ready to take a walk on the wild side? Let’s go!
DAY 1
Early evening arrival in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei’s capital, transfer to hotel to check in and rest up for an early start tomorrow.
DAY 2
We’re up bright and early for breakfast before hitting the road at 7:30 to drive to Temburong. We’ll hop into our longboats (temuai) and head into the Ulu Temburong National Park for jungle trekking and a canopy walk. Making our way through lush rainforest, spotting wildlife as we go, we’ll reach the beautiful Panji waterfall / Sungai Apan waterfall with its cascaded streams. Dip your toes in if you dare – this natural “spa” features feet-nibbling fish!
We’ll return to the lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing and taking in the stunning surroundings. If you’d like, there’s the option to kayak, zipline or simply explore rich biodiversity here. As the day winds down we’ll catch a spectacular sunset together, watching the sun sink below the dense jungle canopy.
After dinner we’ll go for a night walk, and see how the jungle comes alive all over again after the sun goes down. We’ll tune in the sounds of the forest and our guide will help us identity and spot a range of nocturnal birds, reptiles, arachnids and other creatures.
DAY 3
Today we’re up early for a sunrise walk, once again witnessing jungle life at a different time of day. Amid an orchestra of jungle sounds, we’ll do some bird watching and see if we can spot monkeys and other inhabitants who are active in the early hours.
We’ll grab some breakfast and spend the morning doing some activities like ziplining and wall climbing. In the afternoon, we’ll head back to the city and the rest of the day is your own.
DAY 4
Today we have a free morning to spend as you wish. At midday we’ll check out and head into town for lunch, followed by a tour of urban Brunei. We’ll make stops at the country’s two major mosques, as well as the Royal Regalia Museum, home to the Sultanate’s heirlooms and treasures. Here we’ll find impressive symbols of the country’s wealth and history, from golden chariots to symbolic weapons, antique photographs and political mementos.
We’ll make one last excursion into nature with a river safari through thick mangrove forests, brushing past low-lying palms and taking in the soothing hum of birdsong and insects chirping. If we’re lucky, we’ll spot the endemic Proboscis monkey, a species only found in Borneo. In the early evening we’ll return to airport for a flight back home.
