Local chefs and restaurateurs David and Tonya Thomas team up to discuss the culinary history of African American cuisine and food traditions associated with Juneteenth. They will each speak to the role of food in their own personal histories and how they invest in unpacking the culinary history of the African diaspora and Maryland’s contributions in their work today.
About the Guest Speakers:
Chefs David & Tonya Thomas have been partners in life and in work for nearly 30 years. Together they have cooked at the James Beard House, traveled to Ireland to work with Guinness’ Meatopia, worked with Michael Twitty’s Roots to Glory Tour, and have appeared on The Today Show and PBS, among others. Chef David Thomas is a Food Network Chopped alumni and was crowned a Grand Chopped Champion in 2020. Their latest project is joining hands with food and culture creatives to establish the Muloma Heritage Center in St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Together they lead H3irloom Food Group, a Baltimore-based organization dedicated to cultivating meaningful culinary experiences that celebrate the region’s authentic foodways, culture, and community.
