Juneteenth derives its name from June 19, 1865, the day that U.S. General Gordon Granger informed the enslaved individuals of Galveston, Texas, that they were officially free. Issued two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, Granger’s decree marked the end of slavery in the rebellious Confederate states. The Emancipation Proclamation officially declared more than three million enslaved people living in the Confederate states to be free.
There were slaveowners in Texas who were aware of the new law, but it wasn’t until the arrival of the Union Army in Texas in 1865 that African Americans knew they were free. The end of the Civil War and the passage of the 13th Amendment finally slavery in the United States. The murder of George Floyd in 2020 was the impetus for June 19th becoming a federal holiday in 2021. It was signed into law by President Biden.
Today, Juneteenth is celebrated across the nation with prayer and religious services, and festivals with music, food and dancing. It is also celebrated in a number of countries outside of the United States to honor the culture, resilience and achievement of African Americans.Join us for an insightful and engaging discussion commemorating Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated event marking the end of slavery in the United States.
