This class explores the fundamentals of soil health and the role cover crops play in improving soil structure and fertility. Participants will learn how soil compaction reduces water infiltration and root growth, and how different cover crops help address these problems in different ways.
Topics include how daikon radishes create deep channels that allow water, air, and nutrients to move deeper into the soil; how ryegrass develops dense fibrous root systems that stabilize soil and reduce erosion; and how white and crimson clover form partnerships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria that help add nitrogen to the soil. Participants will have the opportunity to examine and dissect clover root nodules to determine whether they are actively fixing nitrogen.
The class will also cover the problems associated with bare soil, the importance of organic matter in maintaining healthy soil ecosystems, and practical methods for improving heavy clay soils through the use of cover crops and soil amendments.
Through hands-on demonstrations and experiments, participants will observe how different cover crops influence water infiltration, root development, erosion resistance, and overall soil health.
