Presenter David Wallace will show you how he turns Trash into Art!
Abstract artist David Eugene Wallace discovered a latent talent for creating modern abstract assemblage art. His creations often have the look and feel of industrial art, though the pieces can also look very organic. His works can create a big impact in the interior design of the popular loft-living spaces of urban renewal and virtually any space at home or work. He especially enjoys creating “installation art,” designed specifically for the purpose of “drawing in” foot traffic to a particular space, usually for commercial reasons.
Graduating from the popular North Dallas community of Richardson in 1973, he was given the opportunity to work in the restaurant business that employed him at the early age of thirteen years old. He learned to cook and prepare food, beginning his career as a chef. Later on, he discovered his love for direct contact with the patrons of his establishments. Restaurants would remain his passion for the next fifty-seven years!
He has owned, operated, and sold three restaurants in Tyler, Texas, where he and his wife, Ann, have been married for the past 40 years. Sixteen years ago, they sold their country home and moved to downtown Tyler. He has continued his work with restaurants and helped with the opening of The Grove ten years ago here in Tyler. He enjoys working in both the back of the house as well as serving in the front of the house. He learned a long time ago that people eat with their eyes. It was 16 years ago, after moving into the urban space in downtown Tyler, that he discovered his talent for creating abstract assemblage art. Working in the food industry helped him discover a new talent for creating artfully arranged assemblages that contribute to the feel of any space, at home or work.
His abstract art creations have opened the doors for many opportunities. Over the past 16 years, Wallace has created unique art for many businesses and homes across East Texas and as far away as Dallas. He was a regular featured artist and writer for the popular IN Magazine for almost seven years, showing readers how to do what he has done using recycled materials. He often appears on television, radio, and even talks at the local university, teaching the art of abstract assemblage. He always tells everyone, “There is ART in every heART!”
He, Ann Nell, and their little dog, Mia, currently live in a 2,500-square-foot basement in downtown Tyler. He has designed the space so beautifully that it has been featured in magazines, newsprint, and television. A long-time professional chef, Wallace has often been known as “that cooking guy.” He is now often referred to as “that art guy,” as well.
