All are welcome at our contra dances, where we always have live music in the styles of Irish, old-time, swing, and newly composed music.Come dance with us from 7-9pm to live music!
Contra dancing is a social dance. Contra is purely for fun and not for competition or performance. It requires no experience and focuses on community, making friends and dancing to live music. You don’t need to bring a partner – part of the tradition is switching partners for each dance! A caller teaches each dance, so no lessons are needed; just show up and have fun!
New to contra? Please come at 6:40PM to learn a few basic steps before the dance starts. No experience needed!
There’s no smoking or drinking, and anyone’s welcome to dance together, regardless of age, experience, gender, preference for dogs or cats, etc.
Join us at Englewood Christian Church! (57 N Rural Street, Indianapolis). Enter the main entrance on Rural St. and turn right into the parking lot. Look for the Indy Contra banner to find the entrance to the parking lot. Once inside, follow the signs.
If you arrive after 7pm, the doors may be locked due to security reasons. There will be a wireless doorbell - ring the doorbell and the people at our welcome table will let you in!

Band: Kingfisher from Boston!
They play both traditional and modern contra dance music, and has been hailed as one of the most versatile bands on the road today. Jeff Kaufman anchors the duo from the piano and mandolin, along with a number of instruments he created himself, giving Cecilia Vacanti the opportunity to wow you with intense fiddling renditions of tunes across the spectrum.
Caller: Harris Lapiroff
Harris Lapiroff is a dance caller and organizer from Somerville MA. He was an organizer of Youth Dance Weekend for six years and currently serves on the boards of Cambridge MA’s BIDA dance as well as Pinewoods Camp in Plymouth MA. He strives for an efficient, friendly calling style that gets dancers moving as quickly as possible and then gets out of the way.
After the dance, please stick around and help tidy the room. Make sure you take everything with you and throw all your trash away.
Volunteers Needed! We are needing 1 - 2 volunteers to help at 6pm to help move tables and assist with other tasks as needed. If you can help and would like to volunteer for one of our dances, please contact Hillary Roper, our board members venue liaison at hillaryroper @ gmail.com
Dance Admission:
We will offer a sliding scale for dance admission and membership.
Admission: $5-$20
Membership: $20-$200+
COVID policy: masks and vaccines encouraged, but not required.
