Following this year’s Record Store Day release of ‘1-800-Meltdown’, Season To Risk are back on the road sharing the stage with sisters (Mario Quintero of Spotlights & Jason Blackmore of Molly McGuire).
Coming from the first wave post-hardcore bands, Season to Risk have only gotten weirder over the years. Adding dark synth to their genre-blending mix of noise, math, and indie rock, the Kansas City band has significantly pushed the borders of the genres starting with the ‘In A Perfect World’ album. Touring from the Midwest up the West Coast, Season To Risk will perform songs from all albums including ‘In A Perfect World’ celebrating its 30-year anniversary and music from the recent ‘1-800-Meltdown’ available now on via Init Records.
Sisters have been carving out their own heavy, melodic world since the release of their debut EP “Make It Hurt” in 2020 — a record that laid the foundation for their signature sound: raw, riff-driven rock with an unflinching honesty. Followed by the full length “Leecheater” in 2023.
Now, the duo Jason Blackmore (Molly McGuire) and Mario Quintero (Spotlights), return with “Wings of Deliverance”, a darker, more experimental follow-up that examines the bands fascination with cults, religion, and power structures led through a conceptual exploration of the Jonestown Massacre. Drummer Ian Prince (BirdHands) and bassist Matt Armstrong (Frank Lero and The Future Violents) will be holding down rhythm section duties for this upcoming tour.
Both bands are known for their existential lyrics that stick in your head along with their riffs and make you ponder the deeper meaning of things. “In these kind of lame times, the takeaway of this show is having a good time and feeling some positivity. The old punk rock ethos of community, where we can get together with like-minded freaks and go off.”
Joy Subtraction sounds like whatever you hate; whatever makes you feel ugly and insecure; whatever garnishes your wages. Do you like Radiohead? Joy Subtraction sounds like the exact opposite of Radiohead. Do you hate Black Flag, Burning Brides, NoMeansNo, Future of the Left, and The Beatles? Good—because Joy Subtraction kind of sounds like all of those bands rolled into one. Except way better.
