Formed in 1993, the Latin Grammy-nominated Quinteto has become one of the most important creative music ensembles of the West Coast. Performing Jovino’s original arrangements and compositions, its members excel in near-telepathic musical interactions, modern harmonic journeys, deep lyricism and high energy Brazilian grooves that never fail to excite audiences. Voted several times as Best Acoustic Jazz Ensemble of the year by readers of Earshot Jazz Magazine.
Three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto, a master pianist, composer and arranger, is one of the most important Brazilian musicians working today. Expect an exhilarating journey through the rhythms and colors of Brazil, led by master pianist and composer Jovino Santos Neto. The Quinteto blends samba, jazz, and folkloric traditions with dazzling improvisation and infectious energy — a vibrant celebration of musical joy and virtuosity.
Featuring Ben Thomas on vibraphone and bandoneon, Tim Carey on acoustic and electric basses, Mark Ivester on drums and Jeff Busch on percussion, plus Jovino on piano, flute and melodica.
JOVINO SANTOS NETO
Currently based in Seattle, Washington, Jovino Santos Neto has throughout his career been closely affiliated with the Brazilian master Hermeto Pascoal. He was an integral part of Pascoal's group from 1977 to1992, where he fine-tuned his artistry, performing around the world and co-producing several legendary records.
Jovino’s personal style is a creative blend of energetic grooves, deep harmonies, telepathic improvisation, lyrical melodies and great ensemble playing, always inspired and informed by the colorful richness of Brazilian music. His compositions include samba, choro,baião, xote, forró, marcha and many more styles, rooted in centuries-old musical tradition while pointing to new and adventurous harmonic languages.
Since moving to the US from his native Rio de Janeiro in 1993, Jovino Santos Neto has continued to tour the world and to record prolifically. Currently, Jovino leads his Seattle-based Quinteto and Trio.
Jovino’s compositions have been performed by the Seattle Symphony, NDR Big Band in Hamburg, Swiss Jazz Orchestra and by numerous jazz and chamber music groups. Jovino gives lectures, clinics and master classes worldwide on a variety of musical topics, including the connection between Music and Nature.
BEN THOMAS
Vibist/bandoneonist/composer Ben Thomas is one of the most in-demand musicians in the Pacific Northwest. Known for combining virtuosic technique with flowing lyricism, Thomas’s music spans from pyrotechnic improvisations to delicate soundscapes. In addition to leading jazz and tango ensembles, Thomas performs as a sideman on mallets, percussion, and bandoneon with a wide variety of groups throughout the United States, including the Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto and the Atlas Tango Project. He currently has six albums of original compositions available on Origin Records: "Triskaidekaphobia", "The Mystagogue”, “The Madman's Difference”, “Yet What Is Any Ocean…”, “Eternal Aporia”, and “The Hat with the Grin and the Chuckle”.
TIM CAREY
Tim Carey is a Seattle-based bassist, and composer who has toured internationally and shared the stage with artists such as Jovino Santos Neto, Groove for Thought, 8-Bit Big Band, Ganesh Rajagopalan, and the Total Experience Gospel Choir. He taught music theory, and composition at Cornish from 2011–2020, guitar and music production at Bellevue College from 2014–2018, and has directed the jazz band at Seattle’s Holy Names Academy since 2012. He has also presented clinics and workshops at institutions across the U.S., including CalArts, the University of North Texas, UC Greeley, and Cal State Long Beach.
In addition to his active performing career, Carey currently serves as Program Director at Jazz Night School, Seattle’s community-based jazz education organization.
MARK IVESTER
Mark Ivester is a consummate drummer, widely respected for his sensitive musicianship and sincere dedication to his craft. He is experienced in many different idioms from pop-rock to big band to jazz, latin jazz and orchestral settings. Mark’s live performance credits are extensive, having worked with such jazz luminaries as John Patitucci, Larry Coryell, Freddy Hubbard, Mal Waldron, Diane Schuur, Eliane Elias, Bud Shank, Howard Roberts, Jack Sheldon, Michael Brecker, Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, Frank Foster, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Tierney Sutton, Ann Hampton-Calloway, Karyn Allison and Mose Allison. His versatility is demonstrated on a wide range of recordings such as film scores, jingles and album projects including those of R&B artist Philip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire, Grammy award winning new-age duo Tingstad and Rumbel, Brazilian keyboardist Jovino Santos Neto and vocalist Greta Matassa. Mark is currently on the faculty of Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA.
JEFF BUSCH
Seattle based musician, Jeff Busch is an exuberant drummer/percussionist, vocalist, and composer whose passion for soulful music of varied traditions has led him to perform with jazz, blues, and gospel groups--as well as calypso, samba, and Cuban jazz ensembles. His work as a sideman over the past 20yrs has included performances and/or recordings with 3-time Grammy winning vocalist Carlos Cascante (of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra), and 3-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto.
Jeff has worked with jazz vocalists Gail Pettis & Greta Matassa, Gospel Singing sensation Patrinell Wright of the Total Experience Gospel Choir, Macklemore, Thomas Marriott, Filo Machado, Romero Lubambo, Maucha Adnet, the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, pianists Marina Albero, Kenny Drew Jr., drummer Ali Jackson, the EntreMundos Quarteto as well as Earshot Album of the Year winners Duende Libre. Jeff has also performed/studied with Master Senegalese percussionist Thione Diop, master Venezuelan percussionist Luisito Quintero and Brazilian master drummers Jorge Alabe and Marcio Bahia.
