About this Event
The Journey Home Film Fest ATL Edition
The Journey Home Festival began in 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, with a bold and intentional mission: to bridge the cultural, historical, and economic divide between African Americans and Africans on the continent, initially focusing on The Gambia and Senegal. As the Journey Home movement expanded and was later established in Monrovia, Liberia, the power of storytelling through film emerged as a natural and essential extension of that mission. In 2022, the Journey Home Film Festival was created in Liberia as a platform to use cinema, culture, and collective memory to further strengthen these transatlantic bonds.
Today, the Journey Home Film Festival celebrates African cinema and global Diaspora storytelling that reflects shared histories, lived experiences, and future possibilities. The Journey Home Film Festival: ATL Edition, presented by the Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival in partnership with the original Journey Home Film Festival in Monrovia, Liberia, extends this cultural bridge from West Africa to Atlanta, the birthplace of the modern Civil Rights Movement, creating a powerful exchange of stories between the continent and its worldwide Diaspora.
MORE ABOUT THE JHFF: ATL EDITION
The Journey Home Film Festival: ATL Edition, presented by the Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival in partnership with the original Journey Home Film Festival (Monrovia, Liberia), is the U.S. expansion of the celebrated Liberian and African filmmaking showcase held annually in Monrovia. Rooted in the festival’s mission to uplift African and African Diaspora cinema, the Atlanta edition extends that vision by creating a powerful bridge between Liberia, the African continent, and the global creative community.
This edition highlights a dynamic lineup of feature films, shorts, documentaries, animations, and creative works from Liberian and African filmmakers, as well as creators across the global Diaspora. Our programming centers stories that illuminate culture, challenge perspectives, and explore the complex truths of African and Black experiences worldwide.
In addition to screenings, the ATL Edition offers filmmaker conversations, industry-driven workshops, and curated networking experiences designed to spark collaboration and strengthen the creative pipeline between the United States, Liberia, and the broader African Diaspora. Staying true to its roots, the festival uplifts both emerging and established talent while celebrating the voices shaping the future of African Diaspora storytelling.
The Journey Home Film Festival: ATL Edition is proud to serve as a cultural connector—promoting artistic excellence, expanding opportunities for filmmakers, and ensuring Diaspora stories claim their rightful place on the world stage.
