Between Truth and Algorithms: Journalism in the Age of AI and Fake News
New technologies have transformed the world in which journalists operate. At the same time, outdated political ideas are making their work increasingly difficult and, in some cases, even more dangerous. Journalists are being manipulated, labelled as enemies of the people, and driven from their own countries. The ‘post-truth’ era, so often discussed by post-Soviet politicians and their successors, is, before our very eyes, giving way to a new world shaped by artificial intelligence, or, more precisely, by those who control it.
What lessons can we draw from this moment? How are journalists adapting to these new realities and countering disinformation? Today, the debate is no longer confined to the future of journalism; it also concerns society’s ability to distinguish fact from manipulation in an age increasingly shaped by algorithms and artificial intelligence. These questions form the focus of a seminar by Famil Ismailov, Senior Editor of the BBC Russian Service.
Speaker:
Famil Ismailov was born and raised in Azerbaijan, then part of the Soviet Union. He graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Lomonosov Moscow State University. He worked for many years in newspapers and television in Moscow and Baku before joining the BBC World Service in 1994, where he continues to work today.
