Join the Sharon Historical Society as we host author and historian Joseph Lambert Jr. for a special lecture presentation “Joseph G. Butler Jr.: Industry, Art, and Legacy in the Mahoning Valley.”
This presentation will feature Joseph Lambert Jr., author of the acclaimed biography “First Citizen: The Industrious Life of Joseph G. Butler, Jr.”, offering a deeply researched and engaging look at one of the Mahoning Valley’s most influential figures.
Joseph Green Butler Jr. (1850–1927) rose from modest beginnings to become a central force in the American steel industry. Beginning his career in iron manufacturing, he went on to co-found the Eagle Iron and Steel Company and played a significant role in the growth of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, helping to establish Youngstown, Ohio as a powerhouse of industrial production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lambert’s work explores Butler’s business strategies, leadership style, and relationships with other industrial leaders during a pivotal era in American economic history.
Beyond industry, Butler was a passionate advocate for culture and education. In 1919, he founded the Butler Institute of American Art—the first museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to American art—reflecting his belief that art should be accessible to the public. He also contributed generously to schools, churches, and civic causes throughout the region.
Drawing from extensive archival research, Lambert will illuminate Butler’s personal life, philanthropic philosophy, and lasting regional impact, including connections to communities such as Sharon, Pennsylvania. This lecture offers attendees a richer understanding of how Butler’s vision and generosity helped shape both the industrial and cultural identity of the Shenango and Mahoning Valleys, and why his legacy continues to resonate today.
The author will have copies of his books to sell and will be available to sign copies before or after the presentation.
This FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC special lecture event will take place on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 6:00 pm at the Sharon Municipal Building, 155 West Connelly Blvd, Sharon, PA 16146.
