A leading interpreter of the fiddle, banjo, and song traditions from the Appalachian South, Joseph Decosimo has introduced audiences around the world to the beauty and vitality of the region’s music. He has contributed ethereal fiddle and banjo to projects from fellow Durhamites Hiss Golden Messenger, Jake Xerxes Fussell, and Wye Oak. Drawing on decades of study with some of the last great traditional musicians in Southern Appalachia, he conjures inviting, minimalist, enveloping sounds from rare old ballads and snaking instrumentals. While deeply rooted, his performances are imminently accessible. It's fiddle and banjo music for people who don't like fiddle and banjo music.

"Decosimo digs into the ancient sounds of the Appalachian mountains, treating old ballads and traditional songs with care as he filters them through his own experimental instincts.... The results are sublime and strangely heartening." - Bandcamp Daily / Best of Country Records November 2022
“Each tune is like the tip of an iceberg. Joseph’s a marvelous fiddler… And he’s a beautiful singer.” - No Depression

"He seems to not be in any hurry to update or invert or, in general, fuck with the old stuff. It is what it is. He delivers it with precision and liveliness and a soft burnished depth, but mostly without gimmicks." - Dusted Magazine
"...when I heard it for the first time, I experienced a similar feeling to when I first heard Jake Xerxes Fussell’s music, one of my favourite artists. Joseph Decosimo’s sound has a haunting quality that lends the old songs he chooses to interpret a certain magic." - Folk Radio UK
