Learn traditional methods of painting oil portraits on canvas while working from a live model. Each day, Joseph will spend the morning demonstrating and walking students through his painting (and thinking) process as he works. Attendees will paint during the afternoons, while Joseph offers group and individual guidance to keep everyone’s paintings on track.Cost: $550 for members, $650 for non-members
Location: Chastain Arts Center, 135 Chastain Park Ave, Atlanta GA
Over the course of the three days, participants will each develop a single painting in successive layers of paint.
Thursday: Underpainting in raw umber to establish the overall shapes and patterns of light and dark
Friday: Color block-in
Saturday: Color rendering, refining, and finishing touches
During this workshop, Joseph will share:
explanations and demonstrations of oil painting materials and techniques, tips for choosing the right painting surface for your needs, strategies for mixing luminous skin tones, differences between painting from life vs. from photographs (with strategies for both approaches), an overview of his commissioned portrait process, and tips for setting up on location and in the studio.
Most importantly, Joseph will provide in-depth discussions about creating the illusion of three-dimensionality in your paintings, using examples from the masters, to help you learn to paint believably lifelike portraits.
While portraiture will be our focus, the techniques and principles covered can be applied to any type of oil painting (landscape, figure, still-life, etc.).
All levels of experience are welcome!

Registration: Maximum 12 students. When the class is full, you may be asked to be placed on a waitlist. If a cancellation occurs after the class is full, the waitlist will be given the first option to register, in order of sign up.
Deposit and Refund Policies: Deposits, accepted, class fee must be paid-in-full by August 16 (either online, or by check received that date). Cancellation is possible with a refund until August 16 (less a 1.9% processing fee) until August 16. No refunds after that date unless the spot can be filled by someone on the waitlist. All refunds of online payments are subject to 1.9% processing fee.
