AUDITIONS FOR
JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
BENEFITTING PRECIOUS DREAMS FOUNDATION
THE HOPEFUL THEATRE PROJECT
“Sha la la, Joseph, you’re doing fine! You and your dreamcoat, ahead of your time!” One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, eleven brothers, and the coat of many colors.
Told entirely through song with the help of a main character Narrator, the musical follows preferred son Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and reunites him with his family.

$15 of every $20 ticket will go towards Precious Dreams Foundation and their mission of providing sleep support, teaching healthy coping mechanisms, and helping youth in foster care and homeless shelters uncover paths to fostering their dreams.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Joseph
Lead, Adult, Vocal Range: Tenor, G4-B2, Dance Level: Beginner
Jacob’s favorite son. Has a talent for interpreting dreams and foretelling the future. Honest and pure in intent. Naive and humble, yet proud. He naturally transitions into the Pharaoh’s “number two”. Believes in himself and is unaware of his brothers’ feelings toward him. Although he is sold into slavery and suffers a string of bad luck, he remains positive. His ability to interpret dreams enables him to rise out of prison and ultimately ensure the future of Jacob’s family.
Narrator
Lead, Adult, Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano, Belt, G5-B3, Dance Level: Beginner
The narrator of the story. The charismatic “leader” of the chorus. Although every character occasionally breaks the “4th wall”, the narrator is very presentational & occasionally interacts with both the audience & the characters on stage. The narrator is typically played by one person, but open to casting two. Will interact with children.
Jacob/Potiphar
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, B3-D2, Dance Level: Beginner
Actor will portray both roles. Jacob: The patriarch of Israel, he is the father of twelve sons, his favorite being Joseph, as he reminds him of his favorite wife. He places his dreams, love, and care in raising Joseph and gives him a beautiful coat of many colors that angers his other sons. Potiphar: A wealthy captain who buys Joseph from the Ishmaelites.
Pharaoh/Naphtali
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, G4-B2, Dance Level: Intermediate
Actor will portray both roles. Pharaoh: The ruling Pharaoh and most powerful man in Egypt -- Ramases. He is considered a god. When he has dreams he doesn’t understand he releases Joseph from jail to interpret them. He is so impressed by Joseph's abilities that he promotes him to a high position within the government. The Pharaoh is traditionally portrayed in the style of Elvis Presley. Naphtali: Fifth Son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother.
Reuben
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate
Eldest son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother. Sings ‘One More Angel in Heaven’. He should have the ability to sing country/blues and show that he can spin a tale, similar to how a cowboy might tell a story at the campfire during dinner.
Simeon
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate
Second son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother. In some productions, sings ‘Those Canaan Days’, and therefore must be able to do a French accent, a la Maurice Chevalier.
Levi
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Third son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother.
Judah
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Tenor, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Fourth son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother. Sings ‘Benjamin’s Calypso’ and must have the charisma to “sell” a Caribbean style.
Dan
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Fifth Son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother.
Gad
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Seventh son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother.
Asher
Supporting, Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Eighth son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother.
Issachar
Supporting, Teen/Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Ninth son of Jacob and Joseph’s half-brother.
Zebulun
Supporting, Teen/Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Tenth son of Jacob and Joseph’s half brother.
Benjamin
Supporting, Teen/Adult, Vocal Range: Baritone, F4-C3, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Twelfth and youngest son of Jacob and Joseph’s full brother. Benjamin is accused of stealing Joseph’s golden cup. When Joseph sees that the brothers are willing to do anything to keep their brother out of jail, he forgives them and releases Benjamin.
Potiphar’s Wife
Featured, Adult, Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano, G5-B3, Dance Level: Advanced
Will double as a wife. According to the script, “she was beautiful and evil and saw a lot of men against [Potiphar’s] will.” She is attracted to Joseph and makes advances toward him each morning, but is unsuccessful.
Kids Chorus
Featured, Ages 6-12, Vocal Range: Soprano/Alto, Dance Level: Beginner
Looking to cast 3-4 children for the kids chorus. Will portray a variety of fun, comedic featured bits including Ishmaelites, goats, and more, along with being the Narrator’s right hand.
Wives
Ensemble, Teen/Adult, Vocal Range: Soprano/Alto, Dance Level: Intermediate-Advanced
The wives of Jacob. The actresses playing the wives also double as Egyptians and servants of Potiphar.
