About this Event
This August and September, the Confucius Institute in Auckland invites you to immerse yourself in the diversity of Chinese culture through a series of fun and hands-on workshops. From the thrill of tabletop games to the artistry of traditional crafts, each session offers a unique opportunity to explore China's living heritage. Whether you're a beginner or simply curious, come along to create, learn, and connect.

Workshop Activities for Culture Month include:
1. Erhu Experience (18 August)
Discover the hauntingly beautiful sound of the Erhu, a two-stringed Chinese fiddle often described as the "Chinese violin." Led by a professional instructor, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn about this beloved instrument and try your hand at playing it.
What to Expect:
- · An introduction to the history and cultural significance of the Erhu
- · Hands-on guided practice—no prior musical experience required
- · Take home a deeper appreciation for Chinese traditional music
2. Mahjong Experience (25 August)
Discover the fun of Mahjong—one of China's most beloved social games! Combining strategy, skill, and a touch of luck, Mahjong is a four-player tile game that has been bringing people together for centuries. Whether you're a first-timer or looking to sharpen your skills, come and experience the excitement of this iconic Chinese pastime.
What to Expect:
- A brief introduction to the history and basic rules of Mahjong
- Guided gameplay in small groups
- Friendly, relaxed atmosphere—perfect for beginners!
3. Lacquered Fan Making (1 September):
Step into the world of ancient Chinese craftsmanship with our Lacquered Fan DIY Workshop. In this hands-on session, you'll design and decorate your own elegant, lacquered fan—a timeless symbol of grace and tradition.
What to Expect:
- A brief introduction to the history and cultural significance of lacquered fans
- A guided fan-making session using traditional materials
- Take home your handcrafted fan as a unique keepsake
4. Sports & Fitness Experience (15 September)
Get moving with traditional Chinese fitness practices! This interactive session introduces you to energizing activities inspired by China's rich sporting heritage. No experience needed, just bring your enthusiasm!

- Introduction to traditional Chinese fitness concepts
- Guided group activities suitable for all fitness levels
- A lively, engaging way to experience Chinese wellness culture
Due to venue limitations, each activity is limited to 20 participants and will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
