Johnny Mullenax, a Tulsa native, grew up in a musical family. He started playing the guitar at age 5. In his teens, he followed his family to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. In typical Johnny fashion, he showed up with just a guitar and ended up sleeping in a stand up bass case. At 18, he used a friend’s ID to get into a club where he was part of a live hip hop band backing rappers. According to Johnny, “Life is too short to play one style of music, and if you have an opportunity to try something different then you should give it a shot.”
Claiming wide-ranging influences from AC/DC and The Ramones to John Coltrane and Parliament, Johnny calls his genre-bending sound a funky country bluegrass good time!
Merging amped-up Americana, hard-twang guitar riffs, and rocking rhythmic attitude, seacoast Maine/New Hampshire-based Dave Hunter and the Seven Hundred haul alt-country and roots-rock deep into the 21st century and bring a burnished swagger to this timelessly compelling sound.
Following in the wake of Hunter’s acclaimed former band, AMA and FAR charting The Molenes, songs on DH700’s debut album are reminiscent of the best of Son Volt, The Jayhawks, early Wilco, classic Steve Earle, Drive By Truckers, Whiskeytown, Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman and others, yet draw their own distinct line from the bluegrass and rural country that informed the genre’s genesis to the “rock and roll with twang” that propels it on the live stage today.
The new band’s debut LP, Tamp That Fever Down, represents Hunter’s finest work. From the mythical folk tale of “It Made the Greatest Sound,” to the haunting enviro-disaster-warning of “Chicken Little’s Bones,” via the poignant midnight escapes of “Leaving Westbrook” and “Hey, Gina” through the rocking “Got a Favor,” it’s also a paean to the people’s America, both to lost dreams and new hopes entirely of our time: music with a message, yet without preaching or proselytizing. Joining lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Hunter are Chris Kelly (guitar, vocals), Steve Barlock (bass, vocals), and Joe Welsh (drums, vocals).
