Johnny Campbell is in Bradninch complete with songs and tales on 19 November as part of his UK tour, he will be including material from his very successful True North, an album of field recorded traditional songs of each Northern English county, recorded on, and around the highest points of each county. Johnny certainly does boldly go, geographically and culturally, gigging on thee continents and into places across Europe in urban squats, historic boats and stylish venues. His songwriting and passion for English folk song brings alive past and current social issues. ''A Modern-Day Billy Bragg'' - Tradfolk and ''Nobody else seems to be doing what Campbell is doing right now, and his passion and determination deserve recognition'' - Jon Wilks. So be prepared for a man that walks the walk, talks the talk and sings with passion.
Since the release of True North on January 26th, the album has received 4**** reviews in MOJO, Songlines, as well as critical acclaim from KLOF Magazine, Folk London, and more. His love of the countryside is acknowledged in Country Walking Magazine, Folk on Foot and BBC Radio 4 Open Country.
In February, he performed a European tour across Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, with half of the shows selling out in advance, as well as a UK tour in March and April, with more sold-out shows. Johnny Campbell is continuing with an Autumn UK tour, bringing his unique take on original and traditional Northern English material across England and Scotland.
With his passion for open spaces, it is no surprise that he is an advocate of walking in the countryside with contributions to the Country Walking Magazine, Folk on Foot and BBC Radio 4 Open Country. He is also an activist on countryside issues, and fittingly he has recorded A Right to Roam (2022) in collaboration with Commoners Choir & Skelmanthorpe Brass Band, this received the accolade of 'One of the Best Folk Songs of 2022' alongside contemporaries such as Eliza Carthy, Jon Boden, Angeline Morrison & more chosen by the online magazine Tradfolk. He has been billed with BBC Folk award nominees & winners in recent years such as Stick In the Wheel, Martin Carthy, Ye Vagabonds, Lankum, Daoiri Farrell, Ewan McLennan, The Men They Couldn't Hang and many more.
Post script - Uncut Magazine - Richard Thompson has given a shout for Johnny Campbell's True North as a stand-out album for 2024.
