Join us on Sept 28th at 3 pm for a book that is close to our hearts, here at Read It Again. Johanna Stein will be promoting her debut middle-grade book, Untangling Hope. A story about foster care, from the child's perspective. Untangling Hope:
“Sometimes you have to piece your family together.”
Hope, a determined eleven-year-old, lands in her seventh foster home in three years. The foster lady seems okay and she has an adorable, rescue dog that actually smiles. But Hope’s not betting on this placement lasting. Besides, Hope doesn’t need a new family. After all, her dad's just doing a little time in jail.
Hope tries to hide her foster status at the new middle school. But her brain gets tangled up as she finds herself getting drawn into real friendships and discovering a love for cross-country running, all the while plotting a daring, secret plan to live with a distant cousin until her dad is released.
Untangling Hope is a contemporary Middle-Grade novel with a refreshingly honest portrayal of foster care. This grace-filled, coming-of-age story is a journey of loss, resilience, and healing.
Johnna Stein:
Johnna loves reading, writing, kids, and dogs, and she especially likes rooting for and writing about underdogs. Untangling Hope is Johnna’s debut novel. She lived a decade of her life in Holland with her Dutch husband, Frank, and right now, they live down by the river in Suwanee, GA, alongside a variety of woodpeckers and their crazy boxer, Lucy. They love spending time with their grown-up kids, Olivia and Jan.
She serves as the VP of Training with Promise686, a non-profit that guides churches to step into the stories of vulnerable children. In seven years of fostering, more than 30 “bonus kids,” aged newborn to 19, have lived in Johnna’s home for anywhere from 24 hours to 2.5 years. Johnna and her husband wholeheartedly believe that kids deserve safe, strong families, and have dedicated their lives to caring for vulnerable children.
