The 19th century portrait painter John Singer Sargent found success creating flattering likenesses with virtuoso brushwork. His ability to render luxurious fabrics made him a favorite among the upper class and aristocracy. Yet his career was punctuated by criticism and controversy, including the scathing reception of major works like Madame X. Sargent himself admitted, “Every time I paint a portrait, I lose a friend.” This program will explore Sargent’s career from his daring and experimental works as an ambitious young artist, through his celebrated Grand manner portraits of the European and American elite, to his major commissions in Boston and later watercolors.
