Bay Area Institution and Renaissance Man, John Santos has spearheaded an unending stream of live performances and studio recordings, all highly lauded by peers and public for over 50 years! He is a prolific producer of recordings and events, multi-percussionist, historian, writer, teacher, composer and bandleader with a staggering resume. His stellar Sextet is Bay Area creme de la creme in terms of soloists, composers, arrangers, and teachers. John's groups have been a veritable incubator of Bay Area talent and a magnet for international masters who have come to the Bay Area to collaborate with him in the studio and onstage. His knack for unique and exciting collaborations that bring together elders and younger generations represent a continuum and vibrant example of how to honor the ancestors, fuse styles, and push the art form forward with imagination and creativity. Vieja Escuela, the new recording by The John Santos Sextet, glowingly reflects the legacy of John and his cohorts, and is blessed by some of John's dearest mentors representing the highest level of respect and excellence in Afro-Latin music - Cuban royalty and golden voice Ernesto Oviedo (RIP), Cuban composer/rumbero extraordinaire Raul de la Caridad Gonzalez Brito "Lali" (RIP), and Puerto Rican Latin Jazz legend Jerry Gonzalez (RIP), as well as his longtime collaborator/teacher and pioneering Cuban percussionist Orestes Vilató (alive and kicking), all of whom will be honored at this concert. The album also features several marvelous guests such as José Roberto Hernandez, Fernanda Bustamante and Anthony Blea who will also be present and onstage for this special concert.
