Versatility and multifaceted talent are the defining attributes of John Oinam, a singer, songwriter, queer model and voice-over artist.Today we witness his tantalising live performances spanning popular covers and folk songs. John has also lent his velvety voice to brands like Airtel, Mobiqwik, and Cars24.com. As an actor, John has been featured in a TVC for Bacardi. He has enthralled audiences at top-tier events, including Sunburn Music Festival and Lollapalooza India Edition.
Besides Manipuri, Hindi and English, John croons Assamese, Bengali, Spanish and Portuguese songs too. He has recently begun to develop his original indie work; true to his roots, he incorporates Manipuri folk music’s unique elements in contemporary ways. He is an active participant in indie collectives Be Right Back and The Revisit Project.
John’s love for entertaining goes way back to his childhood in Manipur, when he danced, sang and put on a show in his close circles. From an early age, his music career saw breakthroughs, including making it to the Top 10 of the Colours reality show The Stage and the Top 30 of Indian Idol. He also made his Bollywood debut with the song Zindagi in Jaggu ki Lalten. He was recently handpicked by maestro AR Rahman to be a part of the prestigious Nexa Music Top 24 team.
Trained in Western vocals and Hindustani classical vocals, John cites Bruno Mars, Sunidhi Chauhan, Asha Bhonsle, and James Brown as his chief inspirations Asha Bhosle, and other early influences include the classic stalwarts: Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.
John has grown up in several different parts of India, owing to his family’s Army background. Now based in Delhi, he is an advocate for several causes, including promoting the visibility of young singing talent in India's remote areas. John is unapologetically queer, and this identity often reflects in his fiery performances.
