This gritty and powerful film, shot mostly in and around Harlem, features an unforgettable performance by Rod Steiger as Sol Nazerman; a Holocaust survivor who is now a bitter pawnbroker who allows himself little connection to humanity. This is the first American film to deal with the impact of the Holocaust from the perspective of a survivor. Lumet's superb direction is enhanced by the brilliant editing of Ralph Rosenblum, the jazz score of Quincy Jones and an excellent cast of African American and Latino character actors including Brock Peters and Juano Hernandez.
