John Legend, whose birth name is John Roger Stephens, has enthralled audiences and critics from around the world with his soulful tunes, passionate singing and prodigious piano skills. A multi-talented artist, he often writes, produces and records his own music. Though largely a solo act, John Legend has collaborated with other famous artists, including Kanye West, Common, Ariana Grande, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and The Roots.

A Legend in the Making

John Legend began his music career by releasing two independent albums, a demo and live recording, while attending the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, he came to the attention of Kanye West, who signed John Legend to his record label. His first major studio album, Get Lifted, became a sensation when it released on December 28th, 2004, selling more than 4 million copies worldwide. He followed it up with Once Again in 2006, Evolver in 2008, Love in the Future in 2013 and Darkness and Light in 2016. He released his first Christmas album, A Legendary Christmas, in 2018. John Legend is one of the most widely recognized musicians of the 21st century. He has won 10 Grammy Awards out of 29 nominations, including the 2006 Best New Artist award, the 2007 Best Male R&B Vocal Performance award for Heaven and the 2011 Best R&B Album award for Wake Up!, a collaborative project with The Roots. John Legend has earned the distinction of being one of the few people to ever win both an Academy Award – the 2015 Best Original Song award for Glory – and a Tony Award – the 2017 Best Revival of a Play award for Jitney. He has also received recognition from the Billboard Music Awards, the American Music Awards, the NAACP Image Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. In 2007, the Songwriters Hall of Fame gave him the Hal David Starlight Award for his support of young musical artists. In addition to music, John Legend has carved out a notable acting career. His 2018 performance in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Jesus Christ Superstar earned him a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series, Movie or Variety Special from the Emmy Awards as well as an Emmy win as a producer. John Legend has also appeared in La La Land, The Savoy King and Soul Men.
