Join The Freight to celebrate the life and music of Django Reinhardt with four days of shows and workshops. Festival Artistic Director Paul Mehling and The Freight’s Artistic Director Peter Williams have assembled an all-star, international lineup of musicians.
GRAMMY®-winner John Jorgenson has collaborated with the likes of Elton John, Pavarotti, Bonnie Raitt, and Bob Dylan. In addition to acoustic and electric guitars, Jorgenson is also regularly featured on mandolin, saxophone, clarinet, bouzouki, pedal steel, and as a vocalist. Jorgenson’s dynamic and internationally-recognized Quintet plays the string-driven swing created by Jean “Django” Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in 1930s Paris. The Quintet features Casey Driscoll (violin), Rory Hoffman (guitar/piano/accordion), Simon Planting (bass), and Rick Reed (percussion).
Frank Vignola is an extraordinary guitarist favored by top musicians like Ringo Starr, Madonna, and Les Paul. He's a sought-after international artist, performing in prestigious venues worldwide. With over 30 CDs, 18 educational books, and acclaimed recordings, Vignola is a prolific figure. He offers online lessons and Jazz Studio, impacting enthusiasts globally. Every Wednesday, he graces Birdland Jazz Club Theatre, NYC.
The Baguette Quartette is a San Francisco Bay Area group that plays music that was heard in Paris between 1920 and 1940 on street corners, in cafes, and in popular dance halls. Its repertoire consists of valses musettes, tangos, pasos dobles, fox trots, marches and realistic songs.
The Hot Club of San Francisco celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Quintette du Hot Club de France. The HCSF borrows the instrumentation of violin, bass, and guitars from the original Hot Club while breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. Featuring the silken violin of twice GRAMMY® Award-winning Evan Price and a swinging rhythm section, the group never fails to surprise and delight.
