In 1870 the first census for Las Vegas identified eight people, including familiar names like O.D. Gass. Three of the people in the census were indigenous women living with a man of mixed race originally from North Carolina. John Howell was a rancher, farmer, teamster and miner who owned the Spring Rancho, original site of the Springs Preserve.
