ABOUT THE ARTIST: John Fleissner (b.1989, Milwaukee, WI) is a printmaker and muralist using art to build the power of working class social movements. John’s experiences organizing in the labor movement inform his subject matter. Often the impetus for a new print or poster is the development of a new organizing campaign. The connection to social movements gives his artwork focus and direction. John teaches Printmaking in Milwaukee Public Schools. As an educator, John focuses on teaching students the power of art to change the world. John organizes with his union the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association for worker and student power.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: During his residency, John Fleissner plans on creating a large scale woodcut series depicting internationally significant events related to labor history, with a focus on labor strikes in the 1930s such as The Toledo Autolite strike, The Minneapolis Teamsters strike, and the San Francisco General Strike. He will also incorporate research on working class organizing in the South, such as The South Tenants Farmers Union. Along with these large-scale prints, Fleissner will work on smaller scale linoleum cuts to create posters. Oftentimes these posters find their way around the world: on picket lines, posted to streets, or on the walls of classrooms. As a teacher and social organizer, Fleissner’s engagements with the public will link printmaking movements to social justice and collective practice.
