JOHN DIKEMAN / PAT THOMAS / JOHN EDWARDS / STEVE NOBLE
John Dikeman (Saxophone)
Pat Thomas (Piano)
John Edwards (Double Bass)
Steve Noble (Drums and Percussion)
Supergroups are not a riskless endeavour - but when they’re made up of longtime friends and master improvisers, they tend to work.
Highly established young American saxophonist John Dikeman is accompanied by a group of UK-based music masters: Pat Thomas on piano, John Edwards on double bass and Steve Noble on drums.
All four musicians are regular performers at the internationally acclaimed Cafe OTO in London.
Pat Thomas has visited The Literary and Philosophical Society on a number of recent occasions for Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music, with John Dikeman last heard for the Jazz North East ‘Going Dutch’ event in 2017, John Edwards and Steve Noble have also visited Newcastle over the years including performances with other highly reputable saxophonists including Peter Brötzmann and Binker Golding.
John Dikeman
John Dikeman is an American saxophonist currently residing in Amsterdam. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, John's playing runs the gamut of improvised music and technique, ranging from reductionist extended technique based improvisation to full throttle free jazz. The underlying characteristic of his music is an unnerving commitment, a total abandonment to sound.
Pat Thomas
Pat Thomas studied classical piano from aged 8 and started playing Jazz from the age of 16. He has since gone on to develop an utterly unique style - embracing improvisation, jazz and new music. He has played with Derek Bailey in Company Week (1990/91) and in the trio AND (with Noble) – with Tony Oxley’s Quartet and Celebration Orchestra and in Duo with Lol Coxhill.
John Edwards
John Edwards is a true virtuoso whose staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role, whether playing solo or with others. Perpetually in demand, he has played with Evan Parker, Sunny Murray, Derek Bailey, Joe McPhee, Lol Coxhill, Peter Brötzmann, Mulatu Astatke and many others.
Steve Noble
Steve Noble is London's leading drummer, a fearless and constantly inventive improviser whose super-precise, ultra-propulsive and hyper-detailed playing has galvanized encounters with Derek Bailey, Matthew Shipp, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Stephen O'Malley, Joe McPhee, Alex Ward, Rhodri Davies and many, many more.
