Postmodern, Post-Human, Post-Christian: In Search of a Magnifica Transhumanitas
The first day of the conference will conclude with a keynote lecture by Professor John D. Caputo, who will explore how emerging technologies and artificial intelligence are reshaping our understanding of what it means to be human. Taking inspiration from Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV's encyclical on AI, Professor Caputo will reflect on the philosophical and theological challenges posed by posthumanism, questioning whether Christian thought can develop a new imagination capable of engaging with a rapidly changing world. His lecture will consider whether Christianity can move beyond its traditional formulations to respond creatively to the realities of the postmodern and post-human age, while remaining faithful to its deepest vision of humanity, community, and hope.
Professor John D. Caputo is one of the most influential contemporary philosophers of religion and Professor Emeritus at both Syracuse University and Villanova University. Best known as the founder of weak theology, his work brings together hermeneutics, phenomenology, and deconstruction to rethink faith, theology, and religion in the context of contemporary philosophy.
This lecture is part of the 4th International Conference Christian Philosophy: Between Christian and Post-Christian Worldviews, taking place on 22–23 September 2026 at the University Ignatianum in Cracow. The conference brings together leading philosophers and scholars from around the world to explore the dialogue between Christian and post-Christian worldviews, addressing fundamental questions concerning religion, ethics, politics, culture, and the future of philosophical thought in contemporary society.
Professor Caputo will participate in the conference online. Participants are welcome to attend the keynote either in person in Room 101 at the University Ignatianum in Cracow or online via live stream.
