Joel Timmons

Joel Timmons is a dynamic songwriter, musician, and journeyman.  Growing up on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, Timmons developed a deep connection to both music and the ocean, influences that permeate his artistic work.

His early years were marked by a passion for surfing and a love for music, cultivated in part by his mother, a photographer and park ranger at Fort Moultrie, a vibrant local arts scene and a close community of aspiring young musicians. In his childhood, Timmons’ journey in music began in earnest when he met lifelong friends and musical collaborators, Ward Buckheister and Russell Clarke. The young musicians honed their craft through school band, choir, guitar clubs, and informal jam sessions. They formed Sol Driven Train in 2000, while they were in college.

Sol Driven Train weaves through musical genres like images in Tom Robbins tect.  The joy that this group of old friends creates when they take the stage is palpable and contagious.  Combining rich varieties of American pop and folk music into their own brass-kickin' roots rock sound, Sol Driven Train has carved out a unique musical identity over more than two decades within the jam and Americana scenes.

As the lead vocalist and guitarist of Sol Driven Train, Timmons has been a driving force behind the band's creative direction. His songwriting often reflects his deep love for the ocean and a strong environmental consciousness. Over 24 years and more than 1,500 shows, Sol Driven Train has released 13 independent albums; they’re known not just for their music but also for their commitment to social causes, including hurricane recovery efforts.

A major turning point in Timmons’ life occurred in 2004 when he was volunteering at a farm in India. He suddenly developed symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. This left him hospitalized in New Delhi, unable to move and dependent on a ventilator and feeding tubes. After seven weeks in the hospital and a rigorous year of physical therapy, Timmons gradually regained his strength and returned to music. This harrowing experience deepened his emotional and spiritual connection to his musical community, which became a vital part of his recovery.

In addition to his work with Sol Driven Train, Timmons performs as lead guitarist and harmony singer with artists such as Maya de Vitry, Yarn, and Sam Rae. He further explored bluegrass and acoustic sounds with the band Lovers Leap, showcasing his versatility and ability to seamlessly blend into various musical settings.

In 2012, Timmons' life took a romantic and geographical turn when he met Shelby Means, at the time the bass player for bluegrass band Della Mae. Their connection led to the formation of the duo Sally & George, named after Means' grandparents. The duo's music captures their chemistry and shared life experiences, blending heartfelt lyrics with intricate melodies.

In 2025, Joel Timmons will be releasing his debut solo album, Psychedelic Surf Country. Recorded in Nashville and produced by Maya de Vitry, the album nods to Joel’s coastal roots and Nashville years, blending his love for the ocean with his experiences in the heart of country music.

Despite the challenges of a life in music, Timmons embraces the journey with gratitude and passion. Whether surfing the waves or riding the highs and lows of performing, he finds joy in creating art and sharing it with others. His story is a testament to the power of following one's passions and the enduring connections forged through music.
