Biography

Joel Redfern is a classical guitarist with a passion for performance, ensemble work and artistic development. A recent graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), he has cultivated a strong foundation in both solo and ensemble repertoire, bolstered by a commitment to expressive and engaging musicianship.

During his studies, Joel was tutored by world-renowned guitarist Craig Ogden, refining not only his technical command of the instrument but also the versatility, professionalism, and artistic awareness required to thrive in today’s musical landscape.

As a performer, Joel is an active member of the emerging guitar duet J2Duo, which is gaining recognition across the UK for its dynamic performances and innovative programming. Through this collaboration, Joel has contributed various original duet arrangements that expand repertoire and reimagine the expressive possibilities of the classical guitar. Their work continues to establish them as a distinctive and exciting voice within the UK classical music scene.

Joel is also an experienced soloist; organising concerts that thoughtfully balance classical repertoire with contemporary works, as well as curating his own arrangements of film music and popular songs. This diverse programming allows him to connect with a wide range of audiences, making his performances both accessible and artistically exciting. His technical development has been further enriched through masterclasses with leading international artists including Xuefei Yang, Gabriel Bianco, Campbell Diamond, Laura Snowden, Gary Ryan, and Tilman Hoppstock; each contributing to shaping Joel’s musical voice.

In addition to his performance career, Joel is actively involved in education and community engagement. As part of a newly formed Youth Guitar Orchestra at the RNCM, he works with students of varying ages and abilities, offering guidance that balances technical development with musical expression. He strives to create a supportive and inspiring environment, encouraging young musicians to grow in confidence and creativity. His long-term ambition is to expand his outreach work, advocating for the importance of music education; particularly within schools across the North of England.

Alongside his musical work, Joel works for BBC Radio 3, where he contributes to a range of projects including Classical Live, Breakfast, Through the Night, In Concert and Music Matters; playing a key role in supporting the smooth running of broadcast operations.

Online, Joel has also built a growing presence, with his content reaching over 500,000 views across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. Through this, he continues to engage new audiences and share his music more widely.

Beyond performance, Joel is deeply committed to using music as a force for good. He has organised and performed in charity concerts, successfully raising funds for organisations such as Cancer Research UK and Parkinson’s UK.

Looking ahead, Joel aims to continue evolving as both a performer and educator, contributing meaningfully to the classical guitar community while exploring new opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and artistic growth.
