Melbourne songwriter, voice actor and comic Jeremy Hopkins, aka Jimmy from Thornbury, is heading to the Bergy Bandroom to finally launch his debut album ‘Jimmy from Thornbury’ on the 24th of October.
As someone working in the music industry with autism, Jeremy has often felt like an outsider looking in. Jimmy from Thornbury walks a delicate line between music and comedy, and helps us consider and laugh about some of the music industry’s long-standing issues and stereotypes. He tackles topics such as the rise of digital streaming, toxic masculinity, white privilege, and the abhorrent use of distortion on acoustic guitar in roots music.
Inspired by the satirical music of TISM, The Lonely Island and The Bedroom Philosopher, each song on the album is a different musical genre, often extending to parodying the music itself. Come and meet all your favourite characters from Jimmy’s debut album including Zealous Craig, Knut Even, Sleeves of Inheritance and Danish Hypeman, in this all-singing, all-dancing comedy music extravaganza.
The evening will be a celebration of diversity with special guests Artemis Muñoz and Katie Dey.
Artemis Muñoz (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist. In 2023 Artemis was the recipient of the Stella Young Award, which each year recognises a young Australian disabled artist for their impact on disability activism. They were also nominated for the Music Victoria Amplify Award and were the recipient of the Creative Victoria Music Works grant to make their debut album ‘Utter Mess’ released in 2024. Artemis has been performing their music live since 2018, both in variety shows in collaboration with other artists and as a part of seasons of their cabaret writing.
Katie Dey is a songwriter, producer from Melbourne and winner of the 2023 Music Victoria Amplify Award. Since 2015 she has released 6 albums, 2 collaborative albums and an EP called "the kraken". She also co-produced Georgia Maq of Camp Cope’s debut solo album ‘Pleaser’ in 2019. Katie has remixed internationally regarded acts like Perfume Genius, Hand Habits, Tomberlin, Montaigne & David Byrne, and her work has itself been remixed by Danny L Harle, Baths, Lonelyspeck, and Laura Les of 100 gecs. Dey's music has been written about glowingly in Pitchfork, Stereogum, NME and more.
