Jim Marshall: Two Sides of the Same Coin—Live Music & Conversation
About this Event
Join SFO Museum for a special evening celebrating the life, work, and enduring legacy of longtime San Francisco-based photographer Jim Marshall (1936–2010), best known for his photographs of musicians and the countercultural revolution that transformed the United States during the 1960s and ’70s.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Jim Marshall: Two Sides of the Same Coin, this program explores the photographer’s unique ability to move fluidly between documenting performance and protest, celebrity and community, public spectacle and private moments. Through a slideshow presentation and conversation, Amelia Davis, steward of the Jim Marshall Photography Archive, and Joel Selvin, music journalist, author, and former music critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, will explore Marshall’s remarkable career and his deep connections to the Bay Area. They will also share the stories behind some of his most memorable photographs, including his images of the Beatles’ final live concert at Candlestick Park in 1966.
The evening will begin with refreshments and a musical performance by The Cocktail Monkeys, featuring selections inspired by the Beatles setlist at Candlestick Park and songs of protest and empowerment from the 1960s and ’70s. Copies of the newly published book The Beatles by Jim Marshall: Live at Candlestick Park 1966 (Chronicle Books) will be available for purchase before and after the program, with a signing following the conversation.
Space is limited. RSVP on Eventbrite by August 2, 2026.
