A Public Lecture by Jim Al-Khalili
About this Event
Does Life know about quantum mechanics?
A public lecture by Jim Al-Khalili
What seems to be emerging from our work is that not only does life make use of quantum mechanics to make it more efficient (long-lived quantum coherence in photosynthesis, quantum entanglement in magnetoreception in animals, tunnelling in enzyme action), but that sometimes quantum mechanics is too prevalent: proton tunnelling in DNA H-bonds leading to too high a level of mutations and so life seems to have evolved mechanisms to mitigate against this and stop quantum mechanics from having such a big effect. Either way, life needs to know about Quantum Mechanics.
Broadcaster and Professor Jim Al-Khalili will discuss these exciting and thought provoking themes in the Great Hall at Wills Memorial building, Bristol University on Saturday 8th July at 5pm. Please book now to avoid disappointment.
This bookings page is open to the general public. Any science teachers and pupils who would like to come will be seated towards the front of the venue in VIP seating. For physics A-level teachers and educators in Bristol, we have a separate eventbrite booking page with the added bonus of a meet and greet afterwards, here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/jim-al-khalili-public-lecture-open-systems-in-quantum-biology-and-beyond-tickets-617603989157
We look forward to welcoming you here for our inaugural philosophy & physics event at the University of Bristol. For any enquiries, please email: [email protected]
