Spend a day exploring the jigsaw method of linocut to create an edition of multi-colour prints.
Printing a linocut jigsaw style is an easy way to print a design in multiple colours. You cut the lino block into pieces, ink them up separately, then put the lino block back together to print.
Your tutor will guide you through designing an image for the jigsaw printing method. You will also be shown how to carve the lino block, apply the inks, and print it – both with our traditional Albion relief printing press, and burnishing by hand. You will be shown examples of lino prints made using this method, and advice on the kind of designs that work best.
The jigsaw printing method is an ingenious way to make impressive, multi-coloured prints without having to carve multiple blocks, attempt a reduction cut, or put your paper through the press more than once. It’s also very satisfying to do!
Who is the workshop for?
This is a mixed ability workshop. Beginners would find this course completely accessible. We will go over carving, inking and printing the lino blocks. However, this course would also be useful for those who have done some lino printing before but never attempted the jigsaw method of printing.
What will I make?
You will make a small edition of lino printed images in two or more colours. We’ll be working A5 size on A4 cartridge paper, and there will be several different ink colours to choose from.
Do I need to bring anything?
All materials will be provided – lino, tools, paper and inks.
If you would like to bring sketchbooks, drawings, photos or other sources of inspiration with you, please do. However, you will also be able to start from scratch with your design on the day.
Who is my tutor?
Susie Rumsby is a Printmaking Instructor at Leeds Arts University, where she introduces students to screen print, etching, linocut, monoprint and bookbinding. Before coming to teach art in Leeds, Susie studied printmaking in Portland, Oregon, where she also worked as a master printer’s apprentice, an artists’ assistant, and at Portland Art Museum helping to put on shows of prints and drawings. Susie is a founding committee member of Leeds Print Workshop, and believes in making the fun of printmaking open to as many people as possible.
If I can't attend can I get a refund?
We will refund you if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after this time no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website.
What if the course is cancelled?
We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.
Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
