Caryn Alter and Steve Cohen, founding members of the Mercer County Jewish Genealogy Society at Beth El Synagogue and members of the Jewish Genealogical and Archival Society of Greater Philadelphia, will explore some genealogical clues that might be “right under your nose.”Learn how overlooked items in your house, the Jewish holiday traditions of your family, and even food customs can provide a glimpse into your family history.
Caryn and Steve, who have done genealogy presentations throughout New Jersey and the Delaware Valley, will also be selling and signing their workbook, What’s in a Name? A Young Person’s Jewish Genealogy Workbook. It is also an excellent resource for adults seeking a basic understanding of Jewish genealogy.

About the presenters:
A registered dietitian by profession, Caryn has been doing genealogy research and freelance writing since college, when she mailed out family history questionnaires to all her relatives. She has done numerous genealogy presentations throughout New Jersey and beyond with Steve Cohen, with whom she wrote What’s in a Name? A Young Person’s Jewish Genealogy Workbook (Hakodesh Press).
Steve, who grew up in Ewing, is a writer and podcaster with a PhD in chemistry who started doing genealogy in late 1970 as a 2 nd -grade school project – he now has over 4,600 people on his tree. He has done numerous presentations around the country on Jewish genealogy. Steve co-wrote an article in Sharsheret HaDorot entitled “The Kantorovitch family from Lakhva,” and a book entitled What’s in a Name? A Young Person’s Jewish Genealogy Workbook (Hakodesh Press) with Caryn Alter.
Both sing in the Lawrenceville, New Jersey-based Jewish choir “Sharim v’Sharot,” which will be coming to Society Hill Synagogue on May 19.
The duo will present “Jews’ Clues: How One Book, Two Authors, and a Few Good Clues can Jumpstart your Jewish Genealogy Quest,” by exploring the genealogical clues right under your nose. Learn how overlooked items in your house, Jewish holiday traditions, and even food customs can provide a glimpse into your family history.
