Participants will learn how, from start to finish, to construct tzitzit, also known as a tallit katan, a Jewish ritual garment that fulfills the commandment to wear fringes. We will learn about the garment itself, as well as its history in the Torah and in custom. This workshop will guide participants through the process, including tying tzitzit, using a garment they provide as the base for their tallit katan. Participants will complete construction of one of the four corners and leave with the skills to complete the other three corners of the garment at home.
Things to consider when selecting your garment:
Do you imagine wearing your tzitzit under or over your daily clothing? Directly against your skin or over an undershirt? If so, what type of garment would facilitate that to work with the clothes you typically wear?
How frequently do you want to wear your tzitzit? daily? weekly? on special days? You might want a more basic garment for daily or weekly wear, and consider something more fancy for special uses.
Ribbed garments can be a little trickier to alter but not impossible. Stick to a flat weave if possible.
