Govinda Gallery Live presents: “Black is Beautiful” by LaMonte McLemore (PowerHouse Books) Hosted by the books editor Chris Murray with special guest Jayne Kennedy
Join us for an unforgettable one-night-only storytelling event celebrating the iconic “Beauty of the Week” feature from JET magazine, brought to life by the man behind the lens—LaMonte McLemore.
Best known as a founding member of the legendary multiple Grammy winning pop/soul group 5th Dimension, McLemore also made history as a pioneering photographer for JET, capturing took over 50,000 photographs for JET’s Black is Beautiful feature across four decades. His weekly column, Beauty of the Week, became a cultural touchstone—celebrating Black joy, beauty, and style through images of everyday women who radiated confidence and grace.
For the first time, “Black is Beautiful” editor Chris Murray will share his personal favorites along with the entertaining and compelling stories behind the photographs.
The evening also features Jayne Kennedy, award-winning actress, sports broadcaster, and trailblazer, who will share reflections from her life-long friendship with Lamonte as well as her powerful new book, “Plain Jayne: A Memoir” (Disney Publishing Group) a candidly honest and inspiring journey detailing her meteoric rise through reflection Hollywood and the cultural barriers she broke along the way!
Evening Includes:
- Family-Style Dinner: Braised Short Ribs, Mac & Cheese, Grilled Salmon with Blackeyed Peas, Green Beans and Dessert
