What would become Andrew Lloyd Webber’s first Broadway musical almost didn’t happen. Jesus Christ Superstar, with music by Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, initially failed to receive the financial backing for a Broadway production. Instead, the team released the music as a “rock opera” in 1970. The album achieved great success and that allowed the money to flow to launch the Broadway production’s run on October 12, 1971. Loosely based on the gospel’s story of the last week of Jesus’s life, much of the plot focuses on Judas, who is unhappy with the direction Jesus is steering the disciples. The production was quite controversial because of its portrayal of Jesus as “just a man,” the interwoven contemporary sensibilities and a (thought) too sympathetic portrayal of Judas. The Broadway production was nominated for 5 Tonys but won none.
We present a filmed performance from the so-called UK Arena tour from November 2012. Paul Marino will introduce the performance and lead a discussion of what we watched. Sponsor: Chases on the Beach – Where It's Always Sunny.
Fee: $10 includes glass of wine or bottle of water.
