“vs” is a contextual work made for Pengerkatu 7 Työhuone.
Jessie Bullivant has been exploring the possibilities of queer companionship and reproduction from the position of a doula over the past two years. “vs” extends this line of enquiry to produce a gesture that infiltrates the gallery through the bodies of its hosts, Vincent Roumagnac & Simo Kellokumpu.
Pengerkatu 7 Työhuone is a space that has been curated by artists and researchers Vincent Roumagnac and Simo Kellokumpu since 2020. Pengerkatu 7 Työhuone offers contemporary art, artistic research, professional massage, and seasonal ikebana workshops. Työhuone hosts invite their visitors to book their private visit beforehand through their online booking-system.
Bullivant’s ongoing interest in roles and social conventions is bound up in their potential to reveal and transgress hidden structures. Examples include; inviting invigilators to shrug during interactions with gallery visitors (ACCA, 2015); nominating themself as a godparent to the curator’s child (LAI, 2018); and being excused from presenting work in their graduate exhibition through a series of sick notes signed by their mother (Kuvan Kevät 2019).
In recent years, they have exhibited at Tensta konsthall (2024), Titanik (2021), SIC (2020), and in 2022 they published their artist book, 'Attached' with Rooftop Press. In 2023 they certified as a full-spectrum doula. Their work is currently supported by Kone Foundation.
