Our October speaker is one of our favorite people! Jess Westbrook is one of those guys who personifies the best things about our sport. Jess formed The Mayfly Project (TMP)…if you don’t know what TMP is, it is one of the partners AFF is most proud to support….TMP is an Arkansas based nonprofit that served over 450 children in foster care in 2023. TMP is a 501(c)(3) organization that uses fly fishing as a catalyst to mentor children in foster care. Their mission is to support children in foster care through fly fishing and introduce them to their local water ecosystems, with a hope that connecting them to a rewarding hobby will provide an opportunity for foster children to have fun, feel supported, and develop a meaningful connection with the outdoors. TMP has 66 programs in 32 states and in the United Kingdom–there are about 2,000 mentors making that happen.
Jess also helps coach and manage the USA Fly Fishing Youth Team…which JUST WON the GOLD medal in the Czech Republic!!
Finally, Jess and his wife Laura were just inducted into the Arkansas Outdoors Hall of Fame for their work with TMP!
We’ve asked Jess to tell us about his work with youth through fly fishing and his own journey through the sport. It will inspire you to see how the sport can be a force for goodness!
